Stray Boulder
A mighty bloc of red Scandinavian granite measuring 320 x 170 x 120 cm and weighing
roughly 10,8 t is a stone with the longest axis (370 cm) in the Czech Republic.
It came to be on the territory of Ostrava of today about 300,000 years ago with
the movement of a Scandinavian continental iceberg. In 1928 a teacher named Josef
Hurník discovered it in a stream in a place called “in the mines.”
Having been moved it served as a memorial to mark 10th anniversary of the Czechoslovak
Republic. Later it was transferred and placed in front of the Local Council in
Poruba and then to its current position in Vřesinská Street in 1968. In 1990
this type of largest boulder in the Czech Republic was declared to be a natural
monument.
Reservation
On 1 September 2003 a part of Poruba was declared a listed zone. The borders
of the zone begin at the crossroads of the streets Opavská and 17th November,
it crosses the axis of Porubská to a so-called roundel, where it turns to the
High Street toward the 5th built-up district. Opposite the former Supraphon shop
it crosses the High Street to Dělnická and Skautská streets and then returns
back to Dělnická Street and Nad Porubkou Street. It passes through the grounds
of Bytostav behind the plant producing pressure vessels to the Porubka stream
and then continues up-stream to Klimkovická Street, past the Poruba Town Hall
to Nábřeží SPB Street and at the crossroads with the 17th November Street. This
street actually traces the way right to the crossroads with Opavská Street. In
simplified terms it in fact includes the built-up areas of Poruba’s districts
I and II.
Statue for Poruba
Miro Požar, a sculptor and artists from Valašské Meziříčí, is responsible for
another special sight in Poruba. In June 2002 he determined to create within
24 hours a work of art in the shape of a woman’s profile from two tons of sandstone.
The original intention and also an attempt to set up a unique record failed
due to unfavourable weather. But the original statue has remained in Poruba
and is a decorative component of the High Street.
The open-Air Swimming Pool
The open-air swimming pool in Poruba-Ves is the largest of its kind in Central
Europe. In the summer months some 15 thousand people come here per day. This
complex, which has undergone considerable changes in recent years, now includes
a giant toboggan, mini-golf courses and tennis courts with an artificial surface,
courts for street-ball and beach volleyball, skittles, table tennis, small-scale
football; there are also several restaurants for visitors to enjoy refreshments.
