History
The earliest report, which we have
about Poruba goes back to 1393 when historic sources mention Stach of
Poruba as a vassal of the Olomouc bishopric. The very name “Poruba” points
to the fact that the entire area was covered by forests (the word “porub”
or “poruba” denotes a place in the forest where the trees are being cut
down). The small village of the Opava princedom situated on the banks
of the Porubka stream, a tributary of the Odra, belonged to the estate
of neighbouring Třebovice in 15th century. It became a separate entity
in 1553 when Ondřej Bzenec of Markvartovice inherited the Poruba keep,
village and court.
This is also the period when the earliest memorials in
Poruba are known to have existed. The history of the church of St. Nicholas,
the centre of the Catholic parish, to which the villages of Poruba, Vřesina,
Svinov and Třebovice originally belonged go back to the 15th century.
In the close proximity of this church the first school was established
of which records exist as of 1650 and which was attended by children
from neighbouring Třebovice, Svinov and Vřesiny until 19th century.
The castle, the Renaissance seat of the Markvartovice
family was originally built in 1573 and served for many centuries as
the residence of the owners of prestigious aristocratic names: Skrbenský,
Oppersdorf and above all the counts of Wilczk. The latter annexed Poruba
to their estate in Klimkovice. The property remained in their possession
until serfdom was abolished in 1848. It was while they ruled that Poruba
was the scene of a serfs’ revolt, which erupted throughout the estate
in 1766 in reaction to the maltreatment of the people by the Wilczk’s
administrators.
Poruba maintained its unchanged rustic character until
modern times. The size of the population was not more than a few hundred
and most of them earned their living by farming. For a long time only
workshops in Ostrava offered employment. It was only in 1903 that a factory
was established in Poruba – this was a workshop belonging to Ignác Blažej
who produced furniture. In 1925 the local railway, which ran between
Svinov and Vřesina, enabled important links with the other villages in
the region. This new form of transport opened up the picturesque valley
of the river Porubka to the vast population concentrated in Ostrava.
The events of the last phase of the Second World War when
the entire area of the village suffered destruction during the heavy
fighting between the Germans and the Soviet army brought to a close one
extensive chapter in the history of Poruba. Thanks to its favourable
setting far from the influence of coalmines Poruba and the neighbouring
villages of Pustkovec and Třebovice were selected in the following years
for a vast housing development, one of the largest in Bohemia and Moravia.
The houses were gradually built as of 1951. Today Poruba consists of
8 built-up areas and Poruba-the village.
